Summer Sewing Time -- Quick Update

Summer time has arrived for me!  Although it is still officially spring according to the calendar, temperatures here in the South will soon be rising to a steamy heat daily!  The summer break (that my career as an accounting and business instructor at a local community college allows me to take) officially began almost two weeks ago at graduation.  This year was rather special as my youngest child and only daughter graduated.  Faculty march each year, but having her in this year's ceremony made this year's event more special.  She will be attending a university next fall with her soon-to-be husband.  I am very proud of her 4.0 GPA which has helped her to secure full tuition scholarships in her major in communications and public relationships.

  1. Hi Ruth,
I found your blog through the Gorgeous Fabrics blog yesterday. I like her fabrics and have ordered from her several times.I just wanted to say hi to a fellow Mississippian. I'm from Brandon about 70 miles west on I-20.

I read through your blog and see you are sewing wedding clothes. I wish you well on that and hope it all goes as you plan. I made my daughter's wedding dress 5 years ago. It was a lot of work but very special to both of us.

Your daughter looks lovely in the Vogue dress. I have that pattern also and thought I'd try it long as I had seen it made up as a long dress with the fishtail hem on Rhonda Buss's blog here: http://rhondabuss.blogspot.com/search/label/vogue%201250 She has also added sleeves to it. There is a lot of really good information on her blog if you aren't familiar with it. I had also seen it on the Sew Intriguing blog post and thought it looked good. My event passed without getting it started so will make it up as a short dress now.

By the way, I want to invite you to the Central Mississippi Sewing Guild meeting if you are ever in Brandon on the fourth Thursday of the month - January though October - at 6:30 PM. We meet at the MSU Extension office on Marquette Rd off Hwy 80.

    1. Hi, Carolyn!
I'm about 80+ miles from you over here in Little Rock, Mississippi. I do get to Brandon occasionally to shop in the Jackson area. Everything I have ordered from Gorgeous Fabrics has always been very nice.

I did see Rhonda Buss's post you mentioned after I had blogged about starting my dresses. I thought her dress was beautiful, also. I really appreciated her post on adding sleeves to this pattern. It is the easiest, fastest dress pattern I have ever made. If I remember correctly, the sleeves on Rhonda's top were long, and that is why the back skirt had to be removed and a complete lower side seam had to be added. I may experiment with adding a shorter sleeve and see if I can leave the lower skirt in once piece. She has great information on her blog--there are so many sewing blogs with inspirational ideas that I find myself overwhelmed with reading and not doing as much sewing as I want sometimes.

Maybe after this wedding is over, I can make it to one of the Sewing Guild meetings. During the school year, I am so busy that it would be hard to get to the meetings, but I would love to see and know about what others here in Mississippi are doing.

Thanks for dropping by--I am just about through with the first bridesmaid dress, and I have to stop and alter the wedding dress--just a couple of quick fixes is all that it will take. I am making Danielle's veil, but I hit the easy button with the dress. She and her fiance became engaged in February, and I just did not think I could do the dress, also. I am sure that your daughter treasures the fact that you took the time to do her dress. That is definitely a labor of love.

Thanks again for the invitation--hope you stop back by to see the results soon.
